A PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) identifies you as a paid preparer. It is renewed annually and must appear on every return you prepare for compensation.
An EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) belongs to the firm and authorizes electronic transmission of returns. It requires an IRS e-file application, suitability checks and fingerprinting for principals.
Many excellent preparers hold a PTIN but no EFIN — often because they do not want to run their own transmitting firm. Pairing them with an established EFIN holder is how both sides grow: the preparer gets steady work and mentorship, the firm gets capacity.
That pairing is exactly what EFIN-PTIN Connect was built for. Qualifying EFIN holders using bank products receive professional software at no cost, and PTIN preparers are matched with vetted offices.
